Blackpool has been at the forefront of the British tourist trade for many decades. Situated n the north west of England it has been a favorite holiday destination for English holiday makers since the late 1800’s and early 1900’s where it was a retreat for the hundreds of thousands of British workers who worked in the Lancashire cotton mills. Unlike many British seaside resorts who had their heyday and then disappeared Blackpool grew and grew and developed itself into the premier tourist destination in England. Even though the weather can be unpredictable millions of tourists still flock back to Blackpool annually. So what is the big attraction of Blackpool and why is it more popular than ever before?

People from all walks of life enjoy what Blackpool has to offer, from fish and chips and a stroll on the promenade to a ride on the trams up and down the front or perhaps a day at the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Amusement park which is Blackpool’s biggest attraction.

Many other competing seaside resorts in England shut down for the winter months but not Blackpool. Each October and November Blackpool switches on the famous Blackpool lights, a one mile stretch of the promenade that is decorated with millions of light bulbs which are fashioned into displays and decorations to wow the visitors. One of the highlights of the year is the “switching on” of the Blackpool lights which is usually carried out by a celebrity and followed by a concert. To be asked to switch on Blackpool lights is seen to be a great honor indeed.

The beach at Blackpool is vast and made of a rough British sand, nothing like the sand that you will find on a Caribbean or Australian beach but sand none the less. Even though the beach is very large it can get very busy on a very hot day in the middle of August.

The quality of the sea at Blackpool used to be a standing joke amongst tourists to Blackpool. In years gone by you were deemed either very brave or stupid if you ventured in to the water because of the amount of pollution that was in the water but in recent years the local authorities have made giant leaps in cleaning up the water and now it is amongst the cleanest in the country.

Blackpool is famed for its loud nightlife with hundreds of pubs, clubs and bars open until the very early hours of the morning and offering every conceivable type of entertainment that a late night party goer could dream of. There is also plenty of entertainment available for you if you are traveling as part of a family group. In Blackpool there are a number of theaters and cabaret clubs that offer very good family entertainment all the way through the season.

As you might imagine there is no lack of accommodation available for tourists. Many of the tourists who stay in Blackpool tend to opt for the bed and breakfast type accommodation which can be very reasonably priced, although dearer in the peak summer season. You can also find some very nice hotels right on the seafront in Blackpool, most of which are priced within the price budget of many of the tourists who choose to visit Blackpool.

Blackpool may not be to everyone’s liking but it is still massively popular with great entertainment and activities for all members of the family
